Reforms, Liberalisation and Congress - From Indira to Sonia Gandhi

Indian reforms policy under  two Congress leaders - Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi

It was a historical Sunday on 04.11.2012 when current Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi fought to dispel the notion that reforms are anti-nationalism. It brings out completion of interesting turn of events in Congress party and larger eco-political landscape of India. Sonia Gandhi has finally reversed much of what her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister had done in late 1960's.

While Indira Gandhi firmly pushed for nationalization of banks, Sonia Gandhi is know reaching out to Indian public preaching that reforms are necessity and good for the country. It marks the reversal in the conditions and state of Indian economy in the times of two Congress supremo. Indira Gandhi's India of late 1960's required push for nationalisation of banks to prohibit concentration wealth and economic power in few private individuals whereas, Sonia Gandhi's time require a push for reforms to achieve desirable economic growth and employment generation.

Congress under Sonia Gandhi (and later perhaps under Rahul Gandhi) is now expected to re-trace the path that was largely followed by Indira Gandhi and perhaps bury the ghosts of nationalization and push for far greater reforms.
